Aucklands Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park is a body of water coving over 1.2 million hectares, situated off the East coast of New Zealands North Island. The nearest major city is Auckland and it's only a stones throw away. The Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park is the main reason why one in three Auckland residents own a boat, this is the highest percentage of any city in the world. There are over 50 Islands in the Hauraki Gulf , many of which are conservation areas managed by DOC (department of conservation) and local volunteers. Some of the Islands are now wildlife sanctuaries and breading program are in place for some of New Zealand most endangered species.
