Aucklands Hauraki Gulf activities
The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park is located around Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city and the Coromandel Peninsula. It has a natural richness, environmental quality, biological diversity and landscape that make it outstanding and distinctive within New Zealand. Click here for more information on some of the Hauraki Gulf Islands. One third of all Auckland households own a boat, the highest percentage for any city in the world. The reason for this is the Hauraki Gulf. A brilliant maritime playground right on the city's doorstep. It's easy to feel like a millionaire as you laze at the end of a fishing line, have fun on a jet ski or stretch out on a white, sandy beach, only the footprints of gulls mingling with your own. The gulf has over 50 Island including Tiritiri Matangi , Rangitoto , Kawau , Rakino, Motuora and Great Barrier to name a few. The Hauraki Gulf attracts a wide range of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and also the occasional seal. Bottlenose and Common dolphins, Killer Whales (Orca) and Bryde's whales seem to spend much of their life within the Hauraki Gulf waters. Blue, Humpback and Sei Whales regularly pass through the Hauraki Gulf, heading northwards in the autumn to tropical wintering grounds and southwards in the spring to Antarctic feeding grounds.
